Glossary of Terms

  • Air Release Valve - Generally installed at the high point(s) of a pipe, this apparatus, which may open either manually or automatically, is used to expel excess trapped air from the system.

  • Cast Iron - A pipe material fabricated of an iron alloy containing carbon and silicon.

  • Biological Treatment - A process that uses living organisms to stabilize and remove organic matter.

  • Ductile Iron - A high strength pipe material that is fabricated from a cast iron alloy in which graphite replaces the carbon that is present. During manufacturing the pipe undergoes an annealing process that increases its strength and flexibility, making it less brittle than cast iron.

  • Erosion and Sediment Control - Generally temporary control measures that trap and confine sediments and solids, preventing them moving by wind, water, or human intervention from one location to another.

  • Interconnection - Any area where newly constructed facilities are reconnected to existing facilities to create a continuous alignment.

  • Open-cut Method - Any excavated area or continuous trench that is visible and open to daylight to construct sub-surface installations.

  • Operational Valve - Valves that are installed to temporarily isolate portions of a pipeline and used for operations and maintenance to reduce disruptions of service.

  • Pump Station - A pumping facility that is used to lift wastewater where topography is too flat or hilly to permit natural gravity flow to a treatment facility.

  • Sanitary Force Main - A sanitary sewer pipe that operates under pressurized conditions, rather than gravity, to move liquids and solids from one end to the other.

  • Temporary Traffic Control - Barrels, cones, barricades, warning signs, and other channeling devices used for the purposes of directing vehicular traffic.

  • Trenchless Methods – A technique by which installations are performed by drilling or tunneling, without the need for continuous open-cut trenches.  Generally used where open-cut methods result in significant disruptions and impacts to the surrounding area.

  • Welded Steel – A pipe material fabricated by bending steel strips in the form of a tube where the longitudinal seems are welded.
