Water main work associated with this project resulted in the installation of new dual 12-inch water operational valves and new water main used to perform an interconnection to the existing water system, across the frontage of a previously abandoned City of Virginia Beach water pump station site. |

This photo shows the cutting head of the machine which was used to install steel casing pipe by trenchless methods well the surface Great Neck Road, Laskin Road and First Colonial Road. |

As the cutting head advances, a hydraulic press pushes steel casing pipe immediately behind. This casing pipe holds the tunnel open for subsequent pipe installation, and minimizes disturbances to the surrounding community which would otherwise be experienced by open-cut methods. |

Installation of 42-inch sanitary force main by open-cut method. Once installed, the area surrounding the pipe is compacted to prevent future settlement over top of the pipe. |

In order to depict the magnitude of pipe being installed, and relative to the individual shown in the photo, 42-inch ductile iron pipe holds a quantity of approximately 77 gallons per foot. |
