Overview
HRSD is undertaking a major project to replace and relocate approximately 4,000 linear feet of gravity sanitary sewer located in the Riverview area of Norfolk. The project is needed to replace aging gravity sanitary sewer, the majority of which was installed in the 1940's and has reached the end of its useful life.  As part of the project, the existing gravity sanitary sewer located adjacent to the Lafayette River will be rerouted towards Holly Avenue and 2,300 linear feet of sanitary sewer laterals serving homeowners will be replaced. The old pipeline will be filled with cement and left in place to minimize disruption.

Most Recent Update
May 3, 2012 – The project is approximately 15 percent complete. The contractor has finished installation of gravity sewer in Ethel Avenue and is completing work in Lucille Avenue.  The contractor is expected to move onto Beach Avenue in early May. Concurrently, the contractor continues to install gravity sanitary sewer in Lavalette Avenue across from the Virginia Zoo elephant exhibit. The project is on schedule with an estimated completion date of November 2012.

Roads Affected
The following roads will be directly impacted at some point throughout construction: La Valette Avenue, Ethel Avenue, Beach Avenue, Lucile Avenue, Holly Avenue, 39th Street, 40th Street, 41st Street and 42nd Street. The use of rolling work zones will typically limit construction to one block at a time, and comprehensive traffic control plans will be implemented to minimize inconvenience.
