PROJECT

"SWIFT Research Center"
Sustainable Water Phase 3 - Demonstration Facility (GN016200)

OVERVIEW

HRSD, your regional wastewater utility, is undertaking a design/build project to design and construct the Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow (SWIFT) Research Center, which includes a 1 million gallon per day demonstration scale advanced water treatment facility and recharge well, pilot scale treatment facilities to support on-going research, and space for hosting and educating the public. The primary goal of this project is to demonstrate, at a meaningful scale, that advanced treatment will produce finished water that meets primary drinking water standards and is compatible with the receiving aquifer. This project is part of the larger SWIFT program that will reuse highly purified wastewater as a resource for aquifer replenishment. These efforts will sustainably recharge groundwater supplies, reduce nutrients discharged to the Chesapeake Bay, support economic development, have the potential to mitigate land subsidence and block saltwater intrusion, may increase available oyster grounds, and will provide drought resilience for more than 25 percent of all Virginians.
