Biodiversity Project Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Program HRSD's Atlantic Treatment Plant, with 150 acres of forest and wetlands, offers its neighbors at Ocean Lakes High School a unique opportunity to conduct a 5-year Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Program. The plant property provides habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna, some of which is endangered. This large, contiguous area is a vital link and resting spot that supports the migration of animals from south Virginia Beach to other habitat areas. The biodiversity (variety of species) has never been measured. Ocean Lakes students will identify the types of plants and trees in a designated study area as part of the program, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution's Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia Department of Education, Virginia Environmental Endowment, and Honda of America (corporate sponsor). Quadrants of 20 meters have been marked in 1 hectare (100 meters by 100 meters) of the hardwoods wetland area. The biodiversity of the quadrants will be measured throughout the program. Ocean Lakes is one of more than 20 schools currently participating in this program, which brings textbooks to life and gives students a chance to use real-world science to monitor the biodiversity of local forest ecosystems while raising awareness about the problems associated with global deforestation and the biodiversity crisis. Students are being introduced to the basic principles of ecology, conservation biology, environmental science, and remote sensing and are learning first hand to be environmental stewards, both locally and globally.
