Celebrate Farming Day

CFD Poster

When area farmers and Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) joined forces several years ago to recycle biosolids, the result was a winning partnership that helps sustain agriculture and protect our planet.

To honor this cooperative environmental recycling venture, HRSD, farm families, agri-businesses and public officials throughout Virginia gather annually for “Celebrate Farming Day.”

Since its beginning in 1999, “Celebrate Farming Day” has become an important opportunity to acknowledge the contributions Virginia’s agricultural industry has made to sustaining agriculture and protecting the environment through recycling and to highlight the success of HRSD’s biosolids recycling program in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

The Virginia State Senate and House of Delegates have both issued proclamations of appreciation for HRSD’s dedication to creating effective recycling programs that promote environmentally and economically sound solutions for wastewater management.

“Celebrate Farming Day” provides a platform to say thank you to the local farmers and agriculture industry for taking a leadership role in protecting our planet and sustaining agriculture.

With its “partnership for protecting the planet” philosophy, HRSD works with dedicated farmers to recycle biosolids, which is an economical and environmentally sound process for cleaning wastewater.

”Celebrate Farming Day,” reminds people that there are wastewater management solutions that can make our state a healthier place for people, animals and plants.

Recycling biosolids is a simple process that produces valuable fertilizer for farming. HRSD retrieves and treats wastewater from businesses and homes throughout Hampton Roads. The wastewater is cleaned and the organic materials are removed and then processed at HRSD treatment plants for recycling to agricultural land. Biosolids are produced according to stringent procedures and policies enforced by the Virginia Health Department, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. These agencies are responsible for establishing criteria for the quality biosolids produced for recycling and instituting site-specific management practices and environmental controls that protect public health and the environment.

Biosolids are rich in nitrogen, phosphorous, micronutrients and organic matter. Biosolids greatly improve soil quality and increase crop production. Biosolids recycling also reduces farmer’s dependence on chemical fertilizers, which helps keep our environment safe and clean.

HRSD initiated recycling biosolids in cooperation with local farmers in 1981. Today, Nutri-Green® biosolids from HRSD are applied annually to more than 1500 acres of farmland in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, producing abundant crops of corn, wheat, and soybeans.

The use of Nutri-Green® biosolids saves each of the more than 40 farmers who participate in the program over $150 per acre in fertilization costs.

“Celebrate Farming Day” is a tribute to HRSD and the Hampton Roads farming community for creating a partnership that helps sustain farming and protects our planet.
