Project Overview
HRSD is embarking on a major project to improve its Chesapeake-Elizabeth Treatment Plant to benefit the neighborhood and the environment. This overview answers key questions.
- Q: Why is this project needed?
A. The plant was built in 1965 and has been renovated over the years, but some of the aging pipes and equipment need to be replaced. The project will also improve the treatment process, enhance safety and further reduce odors.
- Q: What is planned?
A. Extensive renovations will occur. Influent piping, bar screens, grit removal equipment and secondary clarifiers will be replaced. A new automated septage unloading facility will be built. Existing aeration basins and solids handling facilities will be improved. Additional odor control facilities will be added. A second entrance on Shore Drive, further from the busy Lake Shores
Road intersection, is proposed to improve traffic flow.
- Q: When will construction begin?
A. March 2004 is the target date.
- Q: Where is the site?
A. The plant is located at 5332 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and provides wastewater treatment services for the northern part of Virginia Beach and eastern sections of Norfolk.
- Q: How much will it cost?
A. $32.7 million has been budgeted.
- Q: What’s next?
A. Separate projects are underway to improve the incinerator off-gas system and replace the disinfection facilities.
