Interceptor Systems

Interceptor Systems maintains and operates more than 500 miles of interceptor pipeline (from 6 to 66 inches in diameter) and 81 pump stations in Hampton Roads to deliver wastewater from municipal collection systems to our treatment plants.

Interceptor Operations, which has operations centers in Virginia Beach and Newport News, provides day-to-day monitoring, preventive maintenance, and response to problems to minimize system leaks and overflows. Interceptor Operations also performs all Miss Utility marking of HRSD facilities.

Interceptor Services is responsible for evaluatingrequests to connect to the HRSD system and assisting in the location of these connections. As our communities grow, Interceptor Engineers respond to changes such as road construction projects, which often affect HRSD facilities and pipelines. Engineers provide hydraulic modeling support for internal and external needs and review of local projects affecting HRSD to ensure compliance with HRSD standards.

Systems Reliability conducts HRSD's Inflow/Infiltration Elimination program, which helps keep storm water and ground water from the system. They also inspect the interceptors to ensure replacement or renovation before problems occur. They perform specialized investigations of our pipes and pump stations using flow and pressure monitors and CCTV equipment to support complex analyses of these interconnected systems. In addition, Reliability manages the HRSD Corrosion Control and Cathodic Protection Program to prevent premature failure of HRSD facilities.

Because the proper and efficient management, operation and maintenance of our facilities are essential to HRSD's ability to protect public health and the environment, we take all reasonable steps necessary to minimize Sanitary System Overflows (SSOs) and to provide adequate system capacity. HRSD has developed a Capacity, Management, Operations and Maintenance (CMOM) program by which our various departments and divisions work together to achieve our CMOM (pdf) goals.

Engineered Connections

All connection plans and calculations that use these details must be submitted to HRSD for review and approval.

Facilities Management Plan

The annual Facilities Management Plan projects HRSD interceptor system and wastewater treatment plant facility needs for the next eight years. It provides for planning and implementing new projects before HRSD's interceptor systems and wastewater treatment plants exceed their intended capacity.
