York River Treatment Plant PROJECT NEWS: June 16, 2008 - MEB General Contractors, the firm seleted to build the upgrades to Hampton Roads Sanitation District's York River Treatment Plant, has begun site preparation. Neighbors already may have noticed activity as the contractor is working long days and on Saturdays to complete the new plant entrance on Back Creek Road. Construction traffic will use the existing entrance until the new roadway is installed. We regret any inconvenience that this project, which is part of the Chesapeake Bay nutrient reduction strategy, may cause the area residents. During the next few weeks you can expect to see the arrival of more equipment and pilings. There will be some noise associated with driving the pilings; however, this will take place only on weekdays. We do not anticipate night work on this project at this point. While it will be necessary to clear some trees to make room for the new entrance and facilities, we are very pleased that the design developed by Malcolm Pirnie, Inc. in partnership with HRSD preserves much of the forested buffer. We are also quite proud that the design won an award from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in the planning category. The criteria for the award include holistic environmental perspective, innovation, contribution to an improved quality of life, and economic efficiency. We are undertaking the upgrade at the York River Treatment Plant in Seaford to allow HRSD to meet the state-established nutrient reduction mandates by 2011. We've created this web site to provide current information about the project and its benefits. We will update and expand the content as the project progresses.
