Project Overview About York River Treatment Plant and this Project The plant, which was completed in 1983, was initially designed to treat 15 million gallons of wastewater per day (MGD). Upon completion of this project it will have a 30 MGD design capacity. The plant now provides secondary treatment with phosphorous removal. After the upgrade it will feature a state-of-the art nutrient removal process to reduce even further the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous discharged to the Chesapeake Bay. This was the first municipal facility in Virginia to provide its highly treated effluent to a business for industrial water reuse purposes. Since July 2002, this plant has recycled 700 million gallons of water in an effort so successful that it is to be expanded. The biosolids from this plant are recycled into Nutri-Green®, a compost product popular with landscapers and gardeners throughout Hampton Roads. This project will allow the composting process to take place onsite inside a state-of-the-art facility that will feature the latest in effective odor control technology. The proposed design for the new facilities preserves the forested buffer enjoyed by neighbors and will have minimal environmental impact. We are undertaking the upgrade to allow HRSD to meet the state-established nutrient reduction mandates by 2011. The increased capacity will allow us to meet the future needs of the communities we serve.
