Newport News to Jamestown Island – James River – Soil Boring Operations

Body

GET Solutions, Inc., on behalf AECOM and Hampton Road Sanitation District (HRSD) will perform a soil boring exploration within the James River and the Newport News Federal Navigation Channel beginning as early as October 18th and lasting until mid-November. These borings will be used to assist project staff to make design decisions for the design of the Boat Harbor Underwater Transmission Pipe.

Work will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The exploration consists of 32 soil borings aligned parallel to the west side Monitor Merrimac Bridge from Newport News Point (CSX Pier 15), south to buoy “2NR”, south to Pigs Point. Of the 32 locations, 3 are positioned within or directly adjacent to the Newport News Federal Navigation Channel. Each of these 3 locations will require up to one work day to complete, with one additional work day required to complete a second test at one of the locations, for a total of 4 work days within or directly adjacent to the Newport News Federal Navigation Channel.

The 4 work days within the Newport News Federal Navigation Channel are scheduled for October 14, 2021, October 21, 2021, October 26, 2021, and October 27, 2021. All equipment and vessels will be removed from the work area after each workday.

The remaining soil borings (located outside of the Newport News Federal Navigation Channel) will be performed Monday through Friday between October 11, 2021, and November 12, 2021. Soil boring equipment will be housed on a 110’x32’ barge (BR110324) outfitted with power spuds and supported by a 25-foot push tug (Teddi C) owned and operated by Crofton Industries.

The vessel master will issue a security call on VHF-FM channel 13 and channel 16 prior to mobilizing to the day’s work location and at the end of each work day once the vessel has safely moved from the work location. The vessel will monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16 and can be reached directly via cell phone by contacting Teddi C Captain Travis (TJ) Desling (757-807-9928).

A 2-hour advanced notice is requested for vessels that may require the entire channel. The map below shows the Boring Location Plan.
