South Norfolk Pump Stations & Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project
--Project Update--
Byrd Avenue Construction Start
Our contractors continued sewer pipeline replacement efforts down Byrd Avenue this month with the installation of gravity sewer pipes. Activities included dewatering of the pipe trench, excavation, the installation of pipe joints, and preparations for installing manholes. The work is nearing the intersection of Byrd Avenue and Chamberlain Avenue.
During the construction, Byrd Avenue will be closed to through traffic with no street parking. Residents will need to access their homes via side streets. If you live on Byrd Avenue between Bainbridge Boulevard and Rodgers Street, please be aware of the following:
- Mail and package delivery service to residents will not be impacted. Contractors will work with delivery services to ensure that mail and packages reach your home.
- Trash service will continue to be picked up in the locations that you typically place your trash.
- Additional parking at Lakeside Park has been set up as needed for use by Byrd Avenue residents.
- The school bus entrance on Byrd Avenue will remain open to allow access for student pickups and drop-offs during the continued closure of Rodgers Street.
Construction will take place during daytime hours (7 AM – Sunset). During this operation, you may hear noises such as excavation, engines, backup alarms, diesel generators and motors. Your water and sewer service will not be disrupted.
Rodgers Street Sewer Pipeline Update
Continuing work on Rodgers Street included the grading of roadway in preparation of pavement restoration on Rodgers Street between Richmond Street and Byrd Avenue. After completing the installation of a manhole at the intersection of Rodgers Street and Byrd Avenue, our contractors will work to restore that area. Richmond Street remains closed to through traffic.
During excavation and the installation of pipeline, Rodgers Street will be restricted with no through driving allowed between Park Avenue and Byrd Avenue to ensure safety around the construction area. However, although barriers will be in place, residents will be able to access their homes via the side street of Holly Avenue and various alleys. The pipeline work on Rodgers Street is expected to be completed in spring 2025.
Park Avenue Pump Station Update
Contractors continued work on several sections of the pump station, connecting a power line to the control cabinet and installing odor control panels, fuel lines, electrical conduits, and additional process piping. Electrical work has completed at the pump station’s generator building.
Continuing construction work will occur directly on the pump station property itself, Monday – Friday between the hours of 7 AM – 6 PM. As a reminder, construction of this pump station is ongoing until summer 2025.
Bainbridge Boulevard Pipeline Work Update
Work around Redstart Avenue has completed, and our contractors are now saw-cutting to prepare the road for the installation of sewer pipeline further south, including a section that will feed directly into the future Ferebee Pump Station site. Additionally, our contractors have begun work on the installation of a gravity sewer pipeline near Swain Avenue. The pipeline work is tentatively planned to be completed in spring 2025.
As a result of the work on Bainbridge Boulevard, the northbound side of Bainbridge Boulevard will be restricted to one lane between the west entrance to Southgate Plaza near Swain Avenue and Ferebee Avenue to the south. Residents on Bainbridge Boulevard and Swain Avenue will be able to access their homes via their normal routes.
While our project team works diligently to minimize impacts, you may notice increased noise and traffic, along with the people and heavy equipment (with back-up safety alarms) associated with construction. Please take care when traveling around the construction area and for your safety, do not enter the site. Due to the nature of construction, work is weather and situation dependent, and dates are subject to change.
