Reducing Rainwater in the Sanitary Sewer System – James City County
HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, is planning a project to repair aging sanitary sewer pipelines and manholes in your neighborhood. This project will improve the system’s performance during wet weather events and provide continued, reliable sewer service for generations to come. The answers to some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) can be found here.
Project Overview
HRSD is undertaking a project to design and construct important improvements in your community to help reduce the amount of rainwater that gets into the sanitary sewer system through inflow and infiltration. This project will include rehabilitating and replacing damaged sanitary sewer pipes, service lateral connections and manholes. The result of this work will help reduce the occurrence of sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) caused by rainfall events, protecting public health and our region’s waterways.
Rehabilitation activities will include work on existing sewer pipelines and manholes. Limited traffic control and excavation may be necessary to complete the work. Much of the work will not require any excavation and will take place underground and within existing sewer pipelines and manholes. Upon completion, all impacted areas will be restored.
