Smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system is scheduled to take place within the Olde Towne area in the City of Portsmouth during late August.
-- Work to occur from the National Avenue and Willard Avenue intersection to Downes Street --
HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, is working to repair a line break that was discovered on Tuesday, August 6, near Hampton University. To prevent any sanitary sewer spills, crews will install a bypass sewer pipeline from the Willard Avenue Pump Station located at the corner of National Avenue and S. Willard Avenue to Downes Street.

HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, continues work to implement the Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow Program (SWIFT) at the James River Treatment Plant. Sheet piling will occur intermittently on HRSD’s James River Treatment Plant property (please refer to the map on the back of this notice). This work should take place primarily between the hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday - Friday.
NORFOLK – Motorists are advised that HRSD crews will be performing sanitary sewer pipeline improvements at the intersection of Robin Hood Road and Chesapeake Boulevard that requires lane and intersection closures. During this work, traffic will follow a signed detour as indicated on the map below. The detour is scheduled to begin as early as August 6 and is expected to remain in place for 1 to 2 weeks.

HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, is working to install a new sanitary sewer pump station and rehabilitate existing sanitary sewer and manholes in the Phoebus area. This work should take place primarily between the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday, but could include weekend work.
Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) has applied for funding from the Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund to implement the Wilroy Pressure Reducing Station (PRS) and Offline Storage Facility (OLSF) (CIP project NP014000) in Suffolk.
As of July 1, 2024, HRSD has changed the titles of specific positions within the company to better align with industry standards. The list below includes the positions referenced in the 2024 Design and Construction Standards (Standards) affected by these title changes. Wherever these old titles occur in the Standards, please replace them with the new titles.
NORFOLK -- HRSD today recognized 108 private and government organizations in Hampton Roads for perfect compliance with their environmental permits during 2023.
Earning Pollution Prevention (P2) awards this year were Department of the Air Force Langley Air Force Base Joint Base Langley-Eustis (greater than 1,000 employees), Canon Environmental Technologies, Incorporated (101—1,000 employees) and Waste Management-Bethel Landfill (less than 100 employees).
