James River Treatment Plant SWIFT Improvements

Body

-- Well Drilling Update for Well #3 --

HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, is undertaking improvements for the James River Treatment Plant SWIFT project. The drilling at well site #3 (please see the map on the back for location information) will shift to 24-hour operations (Monday-Friday) in order to complete this portion of work in the most efficient manner.

Well Drilling Information:

  • 24-hour work periods promote better stabilization of the well hole being drilled and prevents risk of equipment malfunction that can occur to drill bits, which also causes delays. This creates a more efficient workflow that allows the overall drilling process to be completed sooner.
  • The drilling is a rotary process, not a hammering process, so the noise will be limited to diesel engines and machinery that may sound similar to a generator.
  • Below are pictures of a drilling rig and the drill bits used in the well digging process.

Construction Update:

  • Work at Well #3 on the James River Treatment Plant property will shift to 24-hour operations, with the first night shift planned as early as Wednesday, February 22nd.
  • This Monday-Friday 24-hour operation is projected to last approximately 2 months. The work may take longer based on productivity and weather.
  • There may be minor noise associated with the machines around Well #3. As a comparison, the noise is expected to be no louder than what city traffic would be at a distance of 100 feet away.
  • Well drilling at other locations on the James River Treatment Plant and in Riverview Farm Park will remain in operation during the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at this time.
  • This portion of work should not affect your water or sewer services.

While our project team works diligently to minimize impacts, you may notice increased noise, traffic, crews, and heavy equipment (with back-up safety alarms) associated with construction. Please take care when traveling around the construction area and for your safety, do not enter the site.

Due to the nature of construction, work is weather and situation dependent and dates are subject to change. Please visit the project’s web page www.hrsd.com/james-river-tp-swift-improvements for updates.

Thank you for your support of this effort to help achieve HRSD's vision:

Future generations will inherit clean waterways and be able to keep them clean.
