James River Treatment Plant SWIFT Improvements

Body

--Riverview Farm Park Trails Construction Update--

HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, is undertaking improvements for the James River Treatment Plant SWIFT project. The drilling at well sites (please see the map on the back for location information) will shift to 24-hour operations at multiple well sites in order to complete this portion of work in the most efficient manner. 24-hour operation has already been occurring at wells on HRSD's property. These 24-hour operations may not be occurring every day but will be required as work progresses at the drilling sites.

Well Drilling Information

  • 24-hour work periods create a more efficient workflow that allows the overall drilling process to be completed sooner by promoting better stabilization of the well hole being drilled. Continuous work operations prevent the risk of a collapsed hole, which can seize the below ground drilling equipment, require significant rework, and cause delays.
  • The drilling is a rotary process, not a hammering process, so the sound will be limited to diesel engines and machinery that may sound similar to a generator. During installation of metal well piping, occurring after the active drilling process, you may hear scraping or screeching periodically; this sound is intermittent and only occurs when the metal piping rubs together.
  • Our team has been periodically monitoring noise levels around the drilling activities, within the drilling sites, and in the adjacent areas. The noise level monitoring will continually occur during all well processes.
  • Although well drilling activities are minimal, our team is installing sound barriers at some well sites in Riverview Farm Park to provide dampening of activities.
  • Below are pictures of a well site with a drilling rig and sound barriers, and drill bits used in the well drilling process.Well drilling rig and well site

Construction Update:

  • Work at multiple well sites will shift to 24-hour operations. Night-time well work shifts have been occurring on HRSD’s property.
  • This operation is projected to last 6 to 9 months per well location. The work may take longer based on productivity and weather.
  • There may be minor sound associated with the machines around the wells. As a comparison, the sound is expected to be no louder than what city traffic would be at a distance of 100 feet away.
  • This portion of work should not affect your water or sewer services.
Project map

While our project team works diligently to minimize impacts, you may notice increased noise and traffic, along with the people and heavy equipment (with back-up safety alarms) associated with construction. Please take care when traveling around the construction area and for your safety, do not enter the site. Due to the nature of construction, work is weather and situation dependent, and dates are subject to change.
