FINAL UPDATE: HRSD Responds to Reports of Sanitary Sewer Overflows Near Great Bridge Boulevard and Neal Street in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKEHRSD crews responded to reports of sewer overflows near the intersection of Great Bridge Boulevard and Neal Street that occurred the evening of December 24. A blockage in the sewer line caused the overflow. The blockage was cleared, and the spill was contained in the early hours of December 25. The spill amount volume from HRSD’s sewer system was approximately 2,500 gallons. The City of Chesapeake also experienced wastewater spills from their sewer system due to the blockage in the HRSD sewer line. 

Land surfaces in the area were cleaned by HRSD crews and contractors. Water quality monitoring results of Newton Creek and in the southern branch of the Elizabeth River are provided to the Virginia Department of Health.

There is no disruption of HRSD services, and there are no traffic impacts.
