Green Energy Opportunity

Body

Dear Neighbors,

We recognize that new construction and operational changes may raise questions and concerns, so we would like to let you know about an incredible green energy opportunity HRSD is exploring for the Atlantic Treatment Plant.

In keeping with HRSD’s Promise to treat wastewater and recover natural resources to protect public health and the environment, we are pursuing an opportunity to convert the biogas generated from anaerobic digestion at our Atlantic Treatment Plant into renewable natural gas (RNG). This would allow beneficial reuse of the biogas rather than flaring it (burning the excess gas into the atmosphere) and has the potential to produce enough green energy to heat 4,400 houses annually!

Constructing an RNG facility on our plant property would allow us to convert waste into a valuable energy resource, create an added revenue stream to reinvest into HRSD facilities and maintenance efforts and reduce our carbon footprint.

We are sensitive to the concerns of the Ocean Lakes community and are taking measures to prevent and mitigate any external nuisances arising from this endeavor. Our first step, which will take place this month, will be to solicit a Request for Proposals. As we evaluate proposals received and make selection decisions, we will prioritize open communication with you, our neighbors, through our Community Roundtable group, open house and civic group meetings, NextDoor postings, and direct mailings.

(It is too soon to provide or estimate a construction timeline, but we do not anticipate construction on an RNG facility to begin before early 2025).

For those who may be interested in learning more, the full Request for Proposal RFP#406939 -Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Facility at the Atlantic Treatment Plant can be found here. Once on the page click on the details symbol.

We remain committed to providing you updates on this and other projects taking place at the Atlantic Treatment Plant. HRSD is focused on environmental sustainability and stewardship while being a good neighbor.

We welcome your questions, comments and concerns. Please feel free to contact us at projects@hrsd.com.

Thank you for your time and attention.
