Construction for the new full-scale SWIFT facility at HRSD's Nansemond Treatment Plant is starting soon!

Body

SWIFT (Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow) is an innovative program taking highly treated wastewater that would otherwise be returned to local waterways and putting it through additional rounds of advanced water treatment to bring it to drinking water standards. The resulting SWIFT Water® will be added to the Potomac Aquifer to help replenish rapidly declining groundwater levels. Other environmental benefits of SWIFT include lower amounts of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus entering the Chesapeake Bay and potentially mitigating saltwater intrusion and land subsidence.
