South Norfolk Pump Stations & Sanitary Sewer Replacement Project

Body

--Project Update--

Bainbridge Boulevard Sewer Pipeline Update

map

Sewer pipe installation continues on Bainbridge Boulevard between the intersections of Orville Avenue and Wright Avenue and moving south toward Swain Avenue. Work has included installation of metal surface castings for new manholes and installation of new sewer pipe.

Crews also started to prepare Bainbridge Boulevard for asphalt paving at the intersection of Bainbridge Boulevard and Byrd Avenue. Recent restoration work included the pouring of new concrete curbs and gutters between Byrd Avenue and Orville Avenue.

During pipeline construction, Bainbridge Boulevard will be closed in the northbound lane around the construction areas between Wilbur Avenue and Wright Avenue. Residents on these roads can access their homes via Byrd Avenue and Hughes Avenue detours (see construction notice update #69 for routes).

The overall project pipeline construction is expected to be completed by summer 2027.

Ferebee Avenue Pump Station Update

map

Contractors continued construction at the new Ferebee Pump Station site with the pouring of access platforms and pump supports in the station’s wells. They also continued backfilling operations, placement of piping, and the installation of scaffolding of stairwells.

During material deliveries, soil/debris removal, or concrete pours at the station site, southbound traffic on Bainbridge Boulevard may be reduced to one lane for the safety of our contractor crews and customers.

Final pump station construction is expected to be completed by late 2027.

Park Avenue Pump Station Update

map

Sewer pipeline work is expected to begin as early as the week of May 18th on Park Avenue in front of the Park Avenue Pump Station. Excavation of the roadway and installation of new sewer pipe will start near the intersection of Porter Street and move westward down Park Avenue in front of the new Park Avenue Pump Station site. This new pipe will allow us to connect the new pump station to the rest of the sewer pipe system.

During this time, traffic will be closed in both lanes in the work area depicted in the map to the right. As school will not be in session during this time, this work will not impact bus routes. Construction is ongoing for 4 - 6 weeks.

While our project team works diligently to minimize impacts, you may notice increased traffic and noise such as drilling, engines, backup alarms, diesel generators and motors, along with the people and heavy equipment associated with construction. Please proceed with caution when traveling around the construction area and for your safety, do not enter the work zone.

  • Vibration monitors are in place to ensure that vibration levels are kept below the allowed threshold.

  • Your water and sewer service will not be disrupted.

  • Due to the nature of construction, work is weather and situation dependent, and dates are subject to change
