"Hartfield Pump Station"
Middlesex Interceptor System Program Phase II – Hartfield Pump Station
HRSD Capital Improvement Program Project (MP013720) -
HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, is undertaking a project to construct a new sanitary sewer pump station in the Hartfield area. The new pump station will include new pipes to convey wastewater from Middlesex County to HRSD’s existing sewage system in Mathews County. The new pump station and pipes will generally be constructed along Wood Brothers Road and General Puller Highway. The project will help enable the decommissioning of both the HRSD Urbanna and Central Middlesex Treatment Plants.
Project Cost: $5,211,000

May 8, 2024
Construction has not yet started.
-
The work will be confined to Wood Brothers Road in the Town of Hartfield and General Puller Highway (Rte. 33) at the intersection of Wood Brothers Road. Comprehensive traffic control plans will be implemented to minimize inconvenience.
-
- Construction:
-
Spring 2024 – Spring 2025
- Restoration:
-
Immediately following construction when seasonably appropriate.
-
-
This project is necessary to provide reliable sanitary sewer service to Middlesex County. It will accommodate both current and future sanitary sewer flows and will allow two existing HRSD wastewater treatment plants in Middlesex County to be decommissioned, which will enhance water quality in the region.
-
Disruptions to traffic will be minimized, and in most cases, a single lane of traffic will be maintained. No planned detours are anticipated, but flagging will be used to help direct traffic as needed. The majority of the project work will be located within the public and private right-of ways and on HRSD property.
-
The contractor will ensure that access to residences and at least one entrance to businesses will be maintained throughout construction. Trash and mail services will not be affected. If necessary, the contractor will move trash containers from within a work zone to an area accessible for pickup and will be responsible for returning them to each residence.
-
Work will typically take place Monday through Friday during daylight hours (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.). However, there may be times when extended hours, work at night, or weekend work may be necessary.
-
There may be instances when sewer lateral pipes or water service lines need to be relocated to eliminate a conflict with the proposed pipeline. In these cases, you may be temporarily without water or sewer service while the work on the sewer laterals or water service lines is being performed. The contractor will notify those affected in advance of this work, so they can plan appropriately.
-
Where new pipelines are installed, asphalt, curb, gutters, driveway aprons, and grass will be removed and then restored upon completion of the project.
-
The typical construction noises such as equipment engines, back-up alarms, materials being delivered, diesel generators, air compressors, sawing, etc. should be anticipated.
-
The contractor will store equipment and materials within temporary construction easements, on HRSD property, and within the active work zone, in the public right-of way.
-
Construction workers will not be allowed to park their personal vehicles on the public streets. However, work trucks will be allowed to park within the active work zone.
-
The estimated cost for the project is $5,211,000 and is financed by the wastewater treatment fees paid by HRSD customers.
