Traffic Advisory - January 09, 2024

CHESAPEAKE – Motorists are advised that HRSD crews will be performing sanitary sewer pipeline repairs that require a road closure on Shell Road between Hopewell Drive and Bay Oak Drive. During this work, through traffic will follow a signed detour using George Washington Highway N. (Route 17) and S. Military Highway (Route 13) as indicated on the map below. The detour is scheduled to begin as early as January 16 and is expected to remain in place for 2-3 months.

News Release - December 29, 2023

CHESAPEAKEHRSD crews responded to reports of sewer overflows near the intersection of Great Bridge Boulevard and Neal Street that occurred the evening of December 24. A blockage in the sewer line caused the overflow. The blockage was cleared, and the spill was contained in the early hours of December 25. The spill amount volume from HRSD’s sewer system was approximately 2,500 gallons.

CHESAPEAKEHRSD crews have responded to reports of sewer overflows near the intersection of Great Bridge Boulevard and Neal Street. Crews believe a blockage in the sewer pipeline may be the cause and worked to recover the spilled sewage and remove the blockage using Vactor or vacuum tanker trucks. They have also installed a bypass to prevent additional spilling. The overflow went into stormwater drainage structures along Neal and Marcus streets that lead to Newton Creek, a tributary of the Elizabeth River.
